About the Sangh
Who we are, what we stand for, and how we got here.
One roof for the community's voice
‘Kumbhkar’ is built from the Sanskrit kumbha (pot) and kāra (maker) — literally, one who makes earthen vessels. The name is not a title but a description of the work itself, and the community's identity has come down to it through that craft.
Many households in the community carry the surname ‘Prajapati’. It refers to the Vedic Prajapati, understood as the community's forebear — the shaping, creating power. The meaning of the name and the work of shaping clay meet at the same point.

The geography of the community
The densest settlement of the Kumbhkar community in Nepal lies in the eastern Kathmandu Valley — Bhaktapur and Madhyapur Thimi. Here pottery is not merely a household trade but the daily rhythm of the neighbourhood itself.
The community is not confined to the Valley, however. The Sangh's central office sits in Janakpurdham, Dhanusha, in Madhesh Province — as its own seal records. Bringing together the community of the Tarai and of the Valley within a single structure is the Sangh's work.

Education — the lever the community itself named
The community's social position has improved over recent decades, and the reason pointed to from within the community itself is rising literacy.
The Sangh's education pillar is therefore not an add-on programme — it is the priority the community identified for itself.

Founding
Formally established at the initiative of community elders.
Expansion

Documenting the traditional Kumbhkar craft, transferring it to the next generation and linking it to modern markets.
Education & Capacity Building
Scholarships, tutoring, career counselling and leadership training for students of the community.
Economic Empowerment
Facilitating access to capital, cooperatives, marketing and enterprise training for small producers.
Rights, Inclusion & Accountable Governance
Representation and advocacy at policy level, and transparent governance within the Sangh itself.
Social Welfare & Disaster Response
A relief fund and rapid-support system for sick, disaster-affected and elderly members.
